Easter Needs to be more than Bunnies and Eggs

The story of Easter has become gentled in the reinterpreting of modern days. We link it to spring and the new life that emerges after winter loses its grip.

But the gospel of Matthew tells us of an earthquake, a terrifying angel, and graveyard guards who convulse in fright. The women seek a dead body but find an empty tomb. They hurry away from that tomb confused with conflicting emotions of fear and joy. Suddenly they are confronted by Jesus, an unprecedented event that shakes them up and yet brings them to a new understanding of their Lord, who is their Savior. Thanksgiving and worship is the way to overcome the surprise and fear. And they share the news with others.

That is the expectation for us, to share our Easter. That might come through colorful eggs and baby chicks and bunnies. It can come with joyful expressions with flowers blooming and alleluias sung in praise. We have many fine ways to enjoy Easter and spread its wonder. It is in Jesus that new life is possible for us and a reminder that eternity comes beginning in the now of this life and flowing beyond as we see Jesus and follow him.

If your nose starts twitching, you may have indulged in too many chocolate eggs, so share your Easter basket treats and the good news of Jesus’ rising.
